Mark Zuckerberg has set a new ambitious goal for Meta: the company aims to "responsibly" develop artificial intelligence (AI) that can match human intellect. Meta is working on AI technology that is indistinguishable from human intellect, and the company intends to release the source code "responsibly" as open source. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this in a video on Instagram and shared details with the US magazine The Verge.
To advance work on this Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Meta plans to acquire 350,000 H100 GPUs from Nvidia by the end of the year. In total, the in-house graphics processors for AI development are expected to reach 600,000 H100s. Calculations based on the listed prices suggest that the company might spend at least nine billion US dollars on this initiative. Zuckerberg believes that the technology is crucial, and its capabilities should be made available for everyone in their daily lives. No more apocalyptic warnings.
While Zuckerberg does not explicitly mention AGI on Instagram or to The Verge, his language makes it clear that this is what he is referring to. At the same time, he acknowledges that he himself is not exactly sure what to envision. He suggests there can be debates about whether such AI technology "matches human intelligence" or whether it represents a superintelligence in the distant future or a kind of "enhanced human." The key is that it encompasses various abilities, including the capacity for thinking and intuition. Zuckerberg emphasizes that progress is needed in all areas of AI development for the technology to "think logically, plan, remember, write code, and demonstrate other cognitive abilities." In these statements, Zuckerberg adopts the anthropomorphism of technology, a common trend in the industry.
What's striking about Zuckerberg's remarks is the stark contrast to the almost apocalyptic warnings that accompanied the hype around AI just a year ago. In May, hundreds of leaders in the AI industry and research called for prioritizing the risks of the technology, comparable to pandemics or nuclear war. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI responsible for ChatGPT, also warned about the immense risks at that time. However, he seems to have revised his stance, stating at the World Economic Forum in Davos a few days ago that AGI will change the world much less than we all think. Like Zuckerberg, he anticipates the development of such AI soon. Zuckerberg now predicts that we will all regularly communicate with powerful AI technology. Many will do this through AR glasses, he says, referring to the Smart Glasses developed by Meta in collaboration with Ray-Ban. Such glasses are an ideal means of communication for this type of interaction, "because the AI can then see and hear what you see and hear." Here, Zuckerberg also sees the connection to the Metaverse, Meta's latest multi-billion-dollar project. He is not giving up on the vision of virtual reality, even though Meta is shifting its focus once again: "We're just getting started," he promises.
