"Alec Baldwin Faces Indictment in Tragic Shooting of Cinematographer on New Mexico Film Set"

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — On Friday, a grand jury handed down an involuntary manslaughter charge against Alec Baldwin, reigniting a 2021 case surrounding a tragic shooting during a movie rehearsal in New Mexico.

Special prosecutors took the case to a grand jury in Santa Fe this week, armed with new insights into the gun involved. After spending about a day and a half presenting their case, they chose not to field questions.

Baldwin's defense team, represented by Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, signaled their intention to contest the charge. In an email, they expressed, “We look forward to our day in court.” Although the proceedings remain confidential, two witnesses at the courthouse included crew members—one present during the fatal shot and another who left the set the day before due to safety concerns.

During a rehearsal on the set of the Western movie “Rust” in October 2021, Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer, pointed a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Tragically, the gun discharged, fatally injuring Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin claims he pulled the hammer back but didn't touch the trigger, yet the gun still fired.

This latest charge adds to Baldwin's legal woes, potentially putting a seasoned actor of nearly 40 years behind bars. Baldwin, known for his roles in classics like “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Departed,” as well as the sitcom “30 Rock,” now faces the prospect of prison time.
