"Video Captures Mouse Found in Salad at Christchurch Countdown Store"

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is looking into an incident after a video surfaced on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, showing a mouse sitting on a salad at Christchurch's Eastgate Countdown store.

Woolworths New Zealand's director of stores, Jason Stockill, confirmed that the event took place at the Eastgate store in Christchurch. A live mouse was found in the salad section of the deli on the evening of Wednesday, February 7.

Stockill mentioned that the incident was reported promptly, and Rentokil was called to the site. They identified some entry points, which have since been sealed. Additionally, a dead mouse was discovered the following day, indicating that their pest control measures are effective. Stockill expressed apologies to the customers for the incident and reassured them that food safety remains a priority.

While rodent control is continuously emphasized in the food industry, Stockill stated that they consider this to be an isolated incident. They are taking the matter seriously and are re-evaluating their pest management control program for the store in collaboration with Rentokil.

Stockill emphasized the dedication of the store team to maintaining high cleanliness standards and their close cooperation with pest control services to address rodent populations common in urban areas.

Vincent Arbuckle, MPI's New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general, expressed concern about the incident, especially considering the ongoing rodent issue at Countdown Dunedin South. He mentioned that they have requested more information from Woolworths and will have a food compliance officer at the Eastgate store as part of their investigation.

Countdown Dunedin South is not the only store facing rodent problems, as pest controllers caught 13 rats at the South Dunedin Countdown over the weekend. MPI recommended that Woolworths keep the store closed until further notice.

Woolworths New Zealand clarified that while there is no evidence of rats nesting in the store, recent work conducted over the weekend uncovered new entry points that were previously unknown to the store management.
